Old Man of Storr Watercolour

The Blog

I just love painting rocky pinnacles and The Old Man of Storr Watercolour Painting is a good example of this.

This time I tried a different idea to make the back ground range of hills on the mainland and the intervening seascape and lochs, appear to be misty. This was to try to convey the idea of the Misty Isle of Skye and add drama to the watercolour painting.

The colours I used were French Ultramarine, Caput Mortuum Violet (for the sky, distance and shadows), Burnt sienna for the rock pinnacles and finally for the green, sap green mixed with raw sienna. The painting is on St Cuthbert Mill Saunders Waterford Rough High white paper, my paper of choice. Ultramarine granulates perfectly on this surface and I just love it.

To see the view of The Old Man of Storr from the other side, how about this new watercolour of The Storr Lochans.
